Compounded with the challenges of military service, many Haredi lone soldiers suffer loneliness and rejection throughout the course of their military service due to the rift that forms between themselves and their families, some of whom eschew army service. Hence, the percentage of lone soldiers in Haredi units is significantly higher relative to soldiers in parallel companies.
The Danielle Sonnenfeld Foundation launched a campaign to provide warm winter and comfortable summer clothes to Haredi lone soldiers via the organization Osei Chayil which was founded especially to support Haredi soldiers.
Aside from assisting the soldiers by providing clothing, Osei Chayil also arranges to rent separate apartments; supplies kosher food; schedules unity events; assigns soldiers to foster families; and more. Osei Chayil was founded by former journalist Aharon Granot.
